Slow Season in Tofino

While there are destinations in the world that truly have an off season, Tofino’s “off” season is more of a myth than an actuality. The town doesn’t shut down, the locals don’t leave, and there certainly isn’t less to explore.

It may be one of the best times to go - if you don’t mind getting a little wet. The Tofino off-Season is generally from October - April, which is half the year!

What To Expect From Slow Season in Tofino

Like many places in the colder seasons, things get cozier. Tofino feels a lot more like the little coastal village that it is, with more community events and locals around (maybe because they aren’t working their three summer jobs). Think lit fires, warm drinks, hang-outs in warm knits with rain coats draped on the back of chairs and Music Bingo in your favourite restaurant.

While there are places that close for the season or have reduced hours, it doesn’t take away from the atmosphere of Tofino. It can be a great time to find lower room rates for a staycation, a time when you don’t have to wait an hour for Tacofino, and where you can do some of the most epic storm watching in the world.

The weather is predictably unpredictable. Expect rain and wind - wear warm, water-proof layers and don’t worry about showing up to the “nice” places in your rain boots. The whole community - while relaxed any time of year compared to many destinations - is truly in island mode. Things move slower, get simpler, and feel more easeful.

Not to mention weekly happenings like Après Surf which has live music from 2-5 Saturday & Sunday at Roar, Monday Night Movies at the Clayoquot Sound Theatre, or Music Bingo Wednesdays at The Bear Bierhaus.

Slow Season Wins in Tofino

While a couple of places close and many adjust their hours, it’s also a time to find great deals around the city. Happy Hours, exclusive Tapas Tuesday menus, game night wings and beer, and even reduced room rates for locals that want to have a stay-cation  (Duffin Cove has a second night for 50% off rate for local islanders).

There are also the non-monetary wins like less people on hikes, incredible surfing, and a more intimate experience with the land. If you are someone who likes to travel with a slower pace and stay places longer, this is the perfect time to experience the authenticity of Tofino and it’s culture without the rush or expense of the summer season.

There are more community events like dances and movies, workshops, and just general times to be together, gather, and appreciate the beauty that living in Tofino has to offer. The off-season shows us that the magic of this land is much more than what there is to see or do, but the inherent energy of community and togetherness that is available - especially when you slow down.
